Hawker in the City

Last May 2017, my college friend Leah who is now residing in US went home for a short visit.  S'yempre, we had a get together - which turned out to be another gastronomical adventure in one of foreign eateries available locally, Makansutra.

Makansutra is a famed Singapore hawker market.  It is one of the best places to eat at night in Singapore.  Here in Manila, Makansutra is a hawker center-style establishment composing of twelve food stalls including a dessert and beverage counter found at the center of the food center.

This corner reminds of Singapore Museum in Sentosa Island.

The Food Trip

Makansutra features well-loved dishes in Singapore.  And here are the dishes we tried:

(Hainanese) Chicken Rice - available at Bao Ji Xing, this dish is one of the most popular dishes in Singapore and it is even sometimes referred to as Singapore's national dish.  It is boiled chicken - tender and juicy white meat, served with aromatic rice along with dark soy sauce, chili and ginger sauce on the side.  Each serving costs Php 200.

Oyster Omelette - available at Ah Tee, this seafood dish - locally called Or Luak in Singapore, is like an average omelette tossed with oysters, garnished with coriander and served with garlic chili vinegar.  It was fluffy yet crispy - gustong-gusto ko sya!  At the price of Php 320, it is good for sharing.

Ice Kachang - available at the Drinks, Desserts and Delicacies corner, this one is a famous Malay dessert resembling our halo-halo. Its main ingredients are red beans, green-colored jelly, sweetened banana and a mountain of shaved ice coated with yellow, red and green syrups and topped with one scoop of vanilla ice cream.  This super big serving of dessert costs Php 180.

What's ironic with this gastronomic adventure? I haven't sample these authentic Singaporean dishes (except for the Or Luak) for the first time and that first time when I got to savor them was not in Singapore. I remembered by my KL trip last 2012 in which I used to eat Hainanese Chicken Rice for dinner at the local restaurant near my hostel in Bukit Jalil and I sampled Ice Kachang for the first time during the complimentary dinner courtesy of my hosts.

With Claire and Leah... Posted this to show how big the Ice Kachang serving is :)
By the way, Makansutra is located at Unit 209 AB, 2nd Floor, SM Megamall Building A, Mandaluyong City.
