Lakbay Buhay 2018
This May 12,2018, I was able to experience "Lakbay-Buhay" or pilgrimage. Yes, together with my officemate, Banny, we joined the "Lakbay-Buhay" organized by Santa Clara de Montefalco Parish in Pasay.
For this "Lakbay-Buhay Patungo kay Kristong Buhay", it was commemorated by visiting seven churches, particularly in the province of Bataan, and reciting pilgrim's prayers prepared by the Parish.
Our first stop was in Hermosa, Bataan: Saint Peter of Verona Parish.
Saint Peter of Verona is considered as one of the oldest churches in the province of Bataan and shares a huge historical significance. The church was established in 1717 and according to history, the people of Hermosa found a broken boat near the river and inside the boat was the image of Saint Peter Martyr of Verona, a 13th Century Catholic priest. Since then, many miraculous events were attributed to the image.
Our second stop was in Orani, Bataan: Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church.
The Orani Church is dedicated to the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. It became an independent parish in 1714. Much like any other old churches in the country, the Orani Church played a crucial role during the Spanish colonization and Filipino-American war. During the Second World War, the church was used by Japanese as a garrison. The church underwent a series of rehabilitations while the current church was last repaired and improved in 2002 where the "Museo ng Mahal na Birhen Maria" was added to the convent.
Our next stop was in Samal, Bataan: Saint Catherine of Siena Parish.
The first church of Samal was built in the late 16th century under the Dominican friars. It was utterly damaged during the Dutch invasion in the 17th century. In 1898, the church was burned by the Katipuneros to drive out their enemies in the convent. It was rebuilt in 1905.
Our next stop was in Abucay, Bataan: Santo Domingo de Guzman Church.
Saint Dominic of Guzman or simply known as the Abucay Church has a very huge historical significance. Built in 1588 by the Dominican friars, the church is considered as the oldest in Bataan and one of the oldest churches in the country. Interestingly, the church houses one of the earliest printing press in the Philippines, established in 1608 by Father Francisco Blancas de San Jose, O.P. and Tomas Pinpin who used the facility to print books in Spanish and Tagalog.
Our fifth stop was in Balanga, Bataan: Diocesan Shrine and Cathedral of Saint Joseph.
The church is made under the patronage of Saint Joseph. Much like the rest of the churches in the province, the Cathedral was utterly damaged by the Second World War but underwent major renovation.
Our next to the last stop was in Pilar, Bataan: Our Lady of the Pillar Parish.
The church which is dedicated to Our Lady of Pillar was constructed in 1834 and was completed in 1885. The revolution in 1898, however, utterly damaged and destroyed the church and the restoration took place until 1966. The church has a very simple architectural design and a very simple facade as well but it has a very unique feature.
Finally, our last stop was in Orion, Bataan: San Miguel Archangel Church.
San Miguel Archangel Parish Church or better known as the Orion Church was established by the Dominican priests on April 30, 1667, making Orion Church as one of the oldest churches in the province.
