Tabgha

It was nearly lunch when we arrived at Tagha, our next destination after Nazareth during our Nazareth and Sea of Galilee tour last October 26, 2013. And though it was already humid that time, we still managed to smile widely under the sun.

Tabgha, or Ein Sheva in Hebrew, lies on the northwestern shore of Sea of Galilee and at the foot of Mount of Beatitudes. The highlight of our visit there was the Church of Multiplication.

This is the facade of the Church of Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, or shorten as Church of Multiplication.  The church stands on the site of a 5th century Byzatine church.  It is known to be traditional site where the miracle of multiplication of five loaves and two fishes fed 5,000 men took place.

Seen here is the old olive tree in the central courtyard of the church.

The Tabgha Mosaic is the earliest known example of a figured Mosaic in Galilee, Holy Land and Christian art.  It commemorates the miraculous multiplication of loaves and fishes performed by Jesus.

Beneath the altar at the Church of Multiplication is the limestone on which it is believed Jesus placed the loaves and fishes when he blessed them.
